Mt. Asahi in Hokkaido
September 12-22, 2018
Cycle the mountains and valleys of Hokkaido, the beautiful north island of Japan: We start in the city of Asahikawa in central Hokkaido, an hour and a half by air from Tokyo. Transfer to magnificent 7,500 foot Mt. Asahi in Daisetsuzan National Park, where you can ride a cable car, enjoy fall colors, hike to the summit (optional), and soak in thermal hot springs. Pedal down the mountain through rolling hills and valleys dotted with small towns and patchwork fields. Experience local culture – join a tea ceremony, visit a farm, make a traditional lunch, and savor fresh seafood. Visit an Ainu museum and learn about the indigenous people of Hokkaido. Biking distances 30 – 45 miles a day at a moderate pace. Support van in Hokkaido. Bring your own bike or option to rent.
After flying to Tokyo (domestic air ticket extra), explore gardens, museums, shrines, temples, and neighborhoods of the Metropolis by subway and on foot. Note: domestic air ticket to/from Asahikawa is not included (about $300 round-trip).
Cost: $3500 per person (double occupancy)
